Fa-la-la meets Ooh-la-la in the Haight

Can we talk about how cool San Francisco is during the holidays? A week or so before Christmas, I took my 15 year old niece Kendall there so we could spend some time together. Little did I know I would be exposed to one of the coolest neighborhoods, the Haight District.

Our experience began after deciding to take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) into San Francisco. Kendall asked me if we could go to her favorite store Dolls Kills. Of course, I wanted her to find the perfect Christmas gift, so I called an Uber driver to take us to the Haight from Bloomingdale’s.

Taking Uber wasn’t unfamiliar, since I had used it the weekend before in LA with my sister in law. In less than 10 minutes, we were in the Haight district of which I knew nothing about.

My niece seemed to know her way around, so I followed her lead. We began at Love On Haight where my niece was searching for the best fitting pair of pants. She found a few but wasn’t convinced it was what she wanted. I was having fun looking at their sale racks, but ultimately we were ready to move on. Already I was feeling the vibe of the grooviness of it all. I was surprised to see free glitter at the counter (Ooh-la-la) ready for the next customer to add some to their face, in case they felt the need to sparkle.

Next we walked into Dolls Kill  clothing store. I was blown away by the platform shoes, the nastiness of mannequins dressed in men’s scandalous sparkly jockey underwear, and florescent pink fur coats and even see through purses. I did buy my niece a cute pair of black pants that she could wear to her wild concerts as she is a true concert goer. I also bought some glitter circles for my other niece Jasmine Kendall’s cousin, who loves makeup looks among other things. We were so happy to see a Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream store and stopped in for a coffee ice cream shake for me and chocolate chip cookie dough scoop for Kendall. It was just what we needed to keep our shopping experience going.

Piedmont Boutique was bright and eccentric. The perfect place to find the extraordinary outfit in case you want to stand out. I’m pretty sure I saw a few things in there that were X Rated, but nevertheless, we were having a great time.

Magnolia Pub & Brewery offered plenty of draught beers, IPA’s, Pale Ale’s and Dry Stouts, but I was traveling with a 15 year old minor and she wasn’t cool with me having a stop there. Meyer Lemon and Strawberry Kombucha were house-made for the healthy enthusiacs. Thursday’s they offer crispy, juicy fried chicken, so I will definitely be back.

We walked by store fronts with smoke paraphernalia which is totally legal here in California, a candy store which you will probably want after smoking weed, Ceiba an outrageous fashion, music and art store, and a totally awesome new yarn shop named Firebird Yarns where we waited for our next Uber ride. After all, it was getting dark and even though it felt fairly safe and I wasn’t familiar with the neighborhood.

It was still early, so we walked around Union Square where we took in the spectacular Christmas tree and bright flickering lights and windows adorned with wreaths on the Macy’s building, saw the perfectly decorated humongous tree inside Neiman Marcus and watched the cutest puppies and kittens in the windows. A visit to American Eagle was next so Kendall could pick out a pair of jeans that she could wear to school. At least, we got one practical gift that her mom might be on board with.

The rest of the day wasn’t as memorable given we had an hour drive back home on BART during commute time. We were fortunate enough to get seats and had time to stop off at Chick-fil- A  a fast food place for a quick bite for the car ride home. Overall, I was excited to see my niece, to connect with her on her level, which is all they really need at this stage of their development. And the bonus was that I got to experience an area of San Francisco that I had never been to. How cool was that?

So if you are bored and need a fun day out, take a drive to the colorful Haight District of San Francisco. You will be glad you did. My niece and I enjoyed our time together and we will remember it for years to come.

A Whole Lotta Love, Herbs at SHED and Mojitos at Young & Yonder Healdsburg

Spent last Saturday in the North Bay touring the foodie scene in Healdsburg California. My husband Ken and I had the best day exploring the SHED Market, Costeaux French Bakery, and Young &Yonder Distillery. On the way home we stopped off at The Urban Tree Farm Nursery, Sift Bakery and at Aunt Molly’s house in Cotati.

If you’ve never been to Healdsburg, then just go. It’s a vibrant town bursting with restaurants, wine tasting, and breweries like Healdsburg Beer Company, and Bear Republic Brewing Company. We settled for a more “spirit”ual day by having cocktails at Young and Yonder Distillery.

But first, we had to spend time at the coolest place around the SHED. This place is a foodie and gardeners dream offering a market, a cafe’, and a community gathering space. Not only do they offer workshops such as the one coming up from Apiarist Michael Thiele on honeybees, or a cheese tasting class by expert Janet Fletcher, but they offer so much more.

I could walk around there for hours reading cookbooks like “The Art of Fermentation”, by Sandor Ellix Katz, “The Baker’s Appendix” by Jessica Reed, “Small-Scale Grain Raising” by Gene Logsdon and numerous others. It would be awesome to grind my own organic flour someday so I don’t have to worry about the current state of toxic farming in the US.

 

The SHED sells beautiful pottery to serve your elegant gourmet dishes on, rose geranium, lavender oatmeal and coffee mint scented soaps that would be the perfect hostess gift. Luckily, I have my apricot jam to gift when we go to dinner at friends’.

In addition to all these fine goods, Saturday brunch was happening, so we got a few snapshots of their menu items. We would have stayed, but there was so much more to see and do before heading off the tree farm  before it closed. I was impressed with their fresh herbs like lemon balm, purslane, dill, parsley, squash blossoms, sunflower greens, nasturtium, borage, and marigold most of which I grow in my own garden. Here’s a glimpse of my edible flower cocktail class that I taught to my garden club back in May of last year.

 

I could go on for hours about the SHED’S cheese and charcuterie selection, their juice bar, coffee bar, fresh country bread, fresh cut dahlias, sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, and fragrant roses for all of us to be tempted by. I’m sure I’m leaving out plenty, but make a day of it and check it out for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

Lucky for us, we happened upon Young & Yonder Spirits where I had to sample owners Joshua and Sarah Opatz’ Absinthe Mojito. The absinthe is distilled with non-GMO corn, russian river water, anise seed, star anise, fennel, wormwood, coriander, ginger, lemon peel, tarragon, peppermint, lemongrass and eucalyptus.  They add fresh lime, fresh mint, simple syrup and ice to the absinthe and it was super refreshing. I’m loving serving mojitos to my guests when I entertain these days since I now have mint from the garden and lots of fresh citrus from Costco or if I’m lucky, my son Curtis’ backyard tree.

 

Joshua let me peek around the corner and photograph his dried herb and spice collection at Young and Yonder. He had shelves of glass jars full of botanicals like angelica root, sarsaparilla, dried pluots, cedar berries, dried bing cherries and figs, holy basil, honeysuckle flowers, California poppy seeds, lemon balm, rose hips, calendula and more. This week I’ve listened to a podcast on herbs called Remedy the Secret Science. It’s fascinating getting educated on how herbs can help you with sleep, stress and anxiety, healing your immune system, how to sharpen memory, curing lyme disease, solving cardiovascular disease  and depression and reversing cancer.

 

Many of the herbs that  I listed above were featured in the podcast, so purchasing a couple of bottles of their aromatic spirits was a no brainer. Besides, these herbaceus gins, vodkas, and bourbons would make great gifts.

 

Of course, I had to get a few bakery items at Costeaux Bakery for us to nibble on in the car on the way home. I bought a baguette w ham and cheese, a palmier cookie, and a coconut macaroon for us to share since we didn’t have time to sit down and eat. My husband was excited to purchase two new trees from the Urban Tree Farm in Windsor and we had limited time before they closed.

 

Lastly, we picked up some cupcakes and macaroons at Sift Bake Shop in Cotati before dropping in on Aunt Molly. We learned that Molly had just come home from the hospital after having heart rhythm complications. She  and her son Michael were happy to see us especially because we came bearing a “lemony snicket” a vanilla cake lemon curd filling w lemon buttercream frosting cupcake, and “Ooh la la” the classic red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting cupcake, and a few macarons. Molly shared  stories about Ken’s Mom and Dad’s wedding day and we enjoyed the visit very much. Taking the time to visit our relatives is something my husband and I take pride in. Especially since we lost one of my aunts recently.

So if you find yourself looking for something fun to do, and your not too far from the California wine country, go hang out in Healdsburg. We barely scratched the surface and had so much more territory to explore. If you need more proof, check out my last trip to Healdsburg with my niece Michelle. Summer Wedding in Auburn and Berry Pies from Ikeda’s and Machado’s

 

Had the pleasure of attending the Faulkenberry’s wedding last weekend in Auburn with my husband. We were also fortunate to get to stay at my sister in law’s house the evening of the wedding to save a few bucks. She and her husband have a 5 acre property in Auburn California about two hours from our home, but only 25 minutes from the Monte Verde Inn where the wedding was held. Today’s blog will be about our time in Auburn eating and drinking our way around town.

 

 

First stop was checking out the gorgeous property. The house is just perfect for the two of them and guests when needed. The place needs a little renovation, but a little dust and spider webs don’t bother me at all. We hiked all around the ancient oak trees and brambling blackberry bushes full of beautiful fruit. What we didn’t snag off the bushes the birds and wildlife will take advantage of for sure. Beyond the back porch is a huge pond. No kidding. The wedding could have taken place here instead and may become a place of interest to my single nieces and nephew in the near future.

The wedding was spectacular offering a fairy tale for the bride and groom. The venue was studded with enormous flower arrangements absolutely everywhere. It was a sight to see.The parents of the groom Wes have been our good friends for the past 30 years and we were overjoyed to learn about this monumental event.Wes’ father Ray officiated the ceremony which made it even more special. Linda his wife was radiant beyond belief, so excited to marry her son off to this gorgeous girl Kayla.

 

 

 

Other than a few pesky yellow jackets, the evening went off without a hitch. The dj did a great job bringing the guests out onto the perfectly lit up dance floor and we all had a good time. Best of all, our mutual friends Elaine and Craig Cowie who we’ve also known for many years were there as well to celebrate their nuptials. We’ve known Wes since he was a baby so we were overcome with giddiness to see him take the next step in his life.

Lunch at Edelweiss on High Street in Auburn is known for their huge omelets and hearty sandwiches served in a family style atmosphere. The coffee shop has been around since 1989 and it looks like it. We waited over an hour for our food, so I won’t be eating there if I’m ever in Old Town Auburn again.

 

We had better luck the next day at Aweful Annie’s  where we met our friends the Cowies and Louie’s for breakfast. We started off the morning right with their “bacon flight”. Yes. That’s right. We shared jalapeno, smoked cherrywood, candied, and a sweet thai flavored bacon and tasted their deep fried green beans and asparagus. Exquisite! I tried the corned beef hash, homemade buttermilk biscuit with strawberry jam and butter and fruit. The portion was huge so I shared it with everyone. The restaurant also sells cinnamon bread and cinnamon orange decaf tea. Other than having a hard time finding a parking place, we had no regrets.

 

 

Next stop was Ikeda’s Pie Shop which was conveniently next door. I had never been here, but have heard of their fabulous fresh baked pies. There was a Dutch apple, French apple, cherry, cherry cobbler, blueberry, triple berry, lemon meringue, banana cream, chocolate truffle and more. They also had plenty of grab and go snacks like dried veggie chips, which I like for trips like these. I came across the huge selection of specialty olive oils, vinegars and local honey. The beer fridge was jam packed with all the best like Device, Modern Times, Knee Deep Brewing Company, Breaking Bud, Thirsty Bear Drinking Company, Loomis Basin Brewing Company, Breakside Brewing and more. Plenty of hard ciders to choose from as well.

 

One of the locals recommended the pies at Machado Orchards so of course we had to stop by. Besides fresh fruit and pies, this place offered apple and cherry turnovers, mini pies, assorted cookies, muffins, English toffee, peanut brittle, berry milk shakes and slices of pie of every flavor! Unfortunately,  we didn’t buy any because we were on our way out of town to Sacramento for an epic 14 mile bike ride with the Louie’s. I will make sure to make my way back to Auburn in the near future to take advantage of these legendary country hang outs.

 

Over all, Auburn has a piece of my heart. Ken and I made precious memories at the enchanting Faulkenberry wedding. There’s nothing better than weekends away with good friends and family.  There were a few breweries that I would have liked to have tried like Goat House, Dueling Dogs, Moonraker, and Out of Bounds Brewing Company, but that will have to be for another trip.The long bike ride and scoop of espresso almond fudge ice cream after was the frosting on the cake.

Cooking with Family and Celebrating Birthday’s in Wine Country

I’ve noticed that I haven’t written any blog posts lately. Today I am going to change that. I hurt my back gardening a month ago, so sitting at the computer has been a challenge. I’m getting stronger every day and am able to exercise again. Whew! It’s no fun to lay around. My back didn’t seem to get any better when I was sedentary either. I know it sounds crazy. But it’s true. I love to share food stories with others, so here goes. If I can bring friends and family into the kitchen to cook and bake with me, I’m a happy girl. today I will share a few of these stories and I will be including links to my previous blogs that also include recipes.

Just yesterday, my son who recently moved out wanted to make guacamole with me and I was thrilled. He didn’t need my help. Andrew has his own creative recipe testing techniques and I give him suggestions here and there. But for the most part, he’s confident in his cooking game and likes to experiment.

Some of my best memories of my nieces are when they asked me if they could make something with me. Like for instance, when my niece Jamie was craving a sweet treat called “Puppy Chow.” This favorite snack is made with Rice Chex Cereal, Peanut Butter, Milk Chocolate, Confectioners Sugar and our addition of 3/4 Cup of Nutella. It’s messy and you will need your biggest bowl, but it’s definitely worth the effort. Jamie is living in London right now (for the summer) working using her computer science training from Chico State. I’m following her Instagram stories to keep up with her adventure. We all miss her dearly and can’t wait to hear all about her time in Europe.

This foodie day making Puppy Chow was a last minute get together that included my other niece Laura. Many of the cousins take grandma Nilda to breakfast on Sunday mornings, and it was there that they decided a cooking day with Auntie Teri was in order. I had most of the ingredients already, except for the cereal of which I asked them to pick up.

Getting back to Laura, she’s a gem. I’ve had fun getting to know this young woman over the years. She graduated from UC San Diego and works full time at an aviation insurance company in San Francisco. She and Jamie became fast friends when Jamie’s sister Keri went off to college over 5 years ago. Now Keri will be moving back to the Bay Area to live with her parents and pursue a new marketing job in San Francisco. The family couldn’t be more thrilled. I’m the luckiest aunt because they happen to live in my neighborhood, so I’m sure I will be seeing a lot more of her. Her and her boyfriend Sam have been living and working in San Diego. Our families like spending time together, so much that we went to Cancun together in 2013 and 2015.

In a couple of weeks, Keri and I will take a day trip to the wine country to celebrate her birthday. Who knows where we’ll end up. Sonoma was fun with our exchange student from Bilbao and his family.  It’s only about an hour away, but totally worth the drive. Here’s the blog about our foodie day there with fun times wine tasting, and nibbling on yummy cheese platters.

Or we could head into Napa and check out OxBow Public Market . It’s a fun place to hang out for the day. My son Andrew and I went there last November and enjoyed a relaxing day together. Now that my back is feeling better, Keri and I can explore a new Bay Area destination.  I know that I will take plenty of photos so that I can share the day with all of you that follow my blog. How we [ate and drank]our way through the Food and Wine Festival in Disneyland

Had a wonderful time vacationing with several family members two weeks ago in Disneyland and Universal Studios in Southern California. The Disney trip is an annual trip that my sister in law Kathleen organizes (there’s 4 nieces, two sister in law’s and my brother in law) and we were all lucky enough to eat, drink and play our way through the California Adventure Food and Wine Festival together. My boys and husband never want to go. I think they are crazy to miss out on all the fun.

Of course I took tons of pics of the food, the kiosks and what they offered and I was able to sneak a photo with Daniella Malfitano who was getting ready for a cooking demonstration. We tried just about everything from Fried Artichoke Carbonara to their Popcorn Lemonade Cocktail made with Agave Silver Tequila. The Mac and Cheese dish was a big hit and I thoroughly enjoyed the Roasted Asparagus Caesar with crunchy buttery croutons.

My niece Jamie was excited to see her College town Chico written up as where the first American Pale Ale was created in 1980. Both of my sisters and another niece Marie also graduated from Chico state so I’m a huge fan. I didn’t know that Sonoma California had the first microbrewery in 1977 made from old dairy tanks. And as of 2018, there are over 900 craft breweries operating in my home town state of California.That’s a lot of BEER. Plenty of Mimosa Flights were enjoyed by my niece’s Laura and Michelle and they especially loved the Pineapple Juice and Chandon Brut Sparkling Wine.We indulged in the cheese from the Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company , Vella Cheese Company located in Sonoma, and the FisCALini Cheese Company located in Modesto because who doesn’t love cheese.  In fact, I hope to serve a cheese platter on Easter which is this weekend! Maybe I can pick up a few varieties and serve them with my Blenheim apricot jam, candied walnuts, dried fruit and some garlic and olive oil baked sourdough toast. 

This Festival presented by CA Grown had Beverage Seminars, family friendly demonstrations and programs with Jr Chef competitions daily. There’s truly something for everyone at the Disney California Food and Wine Festival.

We were so excited to learn about the upcoming Pixar Pier featuring an high speed Incredicoaster and a Paint the NIght Parade with characters Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack. I can’t wait. Coming to theaters in June is the latest Incredibles 2. I will definitely be making plans to see that movie.

A Foodie Day at Oxbow Public Market during the Holidays

It’s the Holidays and there is so much to do, yet I am driven to get in another blog before the year ends. I have had a good amount of foodie outings since my last post in Healdsburg with my niece in November. I must share with you at least one of my great experiences and of course a recipe.

 

Just this week I spent the day with my son Andrew in Napa. We made a day of exploring Oxbow Public Market. I have been there a few times, but this day was special because it was spent with my son. Andrew wanted to purchase some spices since he hopes to be moving out one day soon and he loves to cook. So off we went to Whole Spice  to find new and different seasonings to cook with.

Andrew spent 3 weeks in South Korea taking an entrepreneur class through St Mary’s College last January and fell in love with the culture, the people and the food. He has since gotten to know the local  Korean Market even taking the time to speak Korean with the owner. He makes great Korean recipes, feels comfortable in the kitchen and enjoys having his friends over for dinner.

He loves Taekwondo and has been teaching for nine years at Tao Sports in Danville. In the last 6 mos he has earned his 4th degree Master and has recently been working at Koo’s Taekwondo https://www.kootkd.com/ for a few weeks. He loves children and is a great instructor.

Back to the food. He and I walked around Oxbow and checked out various businesses besides Whole Spice, like Hudson Greens & Goods, Live Fire Pizza,  Fieldworks Brewery , Anette’s Chocolates, The Napa Valley Distillery, The Olive Press, and lunch at Oxbow cheese and Wine. I had a glass of champagne which went perfectly with my burrata, mixed greens, sun dried tomatoes, and Olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette. It was stupendous! Andrew made his own sandwich with prosciutto de parma, Coconut Gouda and chipotle jelly which he devoured. He also sampled the porter chocolate and coffee beer on tap and of course ordered a glass.

We also walked past Hog Island and Oyster Co knowing that we would be back to order a few of their sustainable seafood specialties from Tomales Bay. We didn’t get a chance to sample Ritual Coffee although I would have loved an espresso to go. Of course I had to get a glimpse of what Kara’s cupcakes had in their case. I almost broke down and bought a few of their beautifully decorated sugar cookies. Every year I have a cookie decorating party where I invite all of my family and friends to decorate sugar and gingerbread cookies. Many are eaten on the spot, but some are set aside for the veterans at the Yountville Veterans Home. The seniors in the memory care center are excited to have a special treat and I’m honored to provide them.

Well, I better get back to my holiday shopping, baking, and wrapping.  I’ve had enough fun for the day sharing my latest excursion in Napa. Here is a family favorite quick bread that I make every Christmas. Cranberry Orange Bread. Warm up your kitchen and your tummy with these hot out of the oven cranberry orange muffins. They are nutritious made with heart healthy walnuts, vitamin C packed cranberries, and orange juice. Make them for your family and friends and you too will find joy in your holiday.
Cranberry Orange Bread

Ingredients:

2 C.  All purpose flour                   

1 3/4 C. granulated Sugar

1 ½ tsp baking powder

1 tsp kosher salt

½ tsp soda                                             

1 ½ C coarsely cut cranberries

11/2 C chopped walnuts

 

1 tsp grated orange zest

1 beaten egg

¾ C. Orange Juice

2 Tbsp Olive Oil

 

Directions:

 

Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and soda. Mix in cranberries, walnuts and zest.

In a small bowl, combine egg, orange juice and Olive oil.  Add to dry ingredients stirring until combined.

Grease 2 mini muffin pans, or use small baking papers and scoop batter out and place into muffin tins. Bake in a preheated oven 375 degrees for 20 min or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean. Remove from pans and cool.
